Earlier today, a user reported an email from service@paypal.com as a phishing using the Phish Alert Button.
Upon investigation, we found that the email was indeed a phishing email, attempting to lure users into providing credentials. Unfortunately, this scam appears to be using a legitimate Paypal account from which these emails are being sent. By using a legitimate tool, such as Paypal, it is more difficult for filters to detect the phishing.
When interacting with emails, Paypal especially, please use caution. If you receive an email from Paypal that you believe is legitimate, please visit Paypal directly through their website, rather than clicking through any links sent in emails. Often times, contacting the original vendor directly through a known individual or contact information listed on the vendors website, will help clarify the legitimacy or illegitimacy of an email.
As always, please contact HelpDesk if you have any questions or concerns. If you have clicked on a link or attachment that then causes you concern outside of normal business hours, please contact danielwitcher@crowder.edu and alstadler@crowder.edu directly so that we can investigate quickly.
