4/1/26: April Fools' Phishing Isn't Funny

Happy April Fools' Day!

April 1st is known for lighthearted pranks and jokes, but for malicious actors, it's also an excellent opportunity.

Phishing relies on surprise, urgency, and lowered skepticism which can be amplified on April Fools' Day.  Email messages promising a fake reward, security alert, or even a "you won't believe this prank" can more easily slip past our normal defensive caution when we assume it's a joke.

Once a malicious link is clicked or an attachment is downloaded, your account or computer may be quickly compromised, even leading to data loss or ransomware.  If you received a concerning email, report it using the Phish Alert Button (directions for use can be found in the Information Services SharePoint site at www.crowder.edu/sharepoint. If you click on a link or download an attachment from an email and then become concerned it may be malicious, call HelpDesk immediately at 417.455.5712 (if you cannot call for some reason please email help@crowder.edu).
